Physical Education Curriculum & FAQ's
What will students be learning about?
Using and designing curriculum based on the national and Illinois State Standards, students will learn about and participate in grade and developmentally appropriate movement based activities that allow each student to improve performance in each activity regardless of initial skill, knowledge or fitness levels. Students should be able to demonstrate and describe progress they have made in skill based activities after each class and should be able to notice progress in fitness throughout the year. Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiovascular Endurance, Flexibility and Body Composition will make up the main topics and skill based activities will be mixed in as well.
What kind of activities will they be participating in? (Depending on Remote, Hybrid, or Traditional)
Each class will include both a skill based component and a fitness based component. Some examples of skill based components for Early elementary include skipping, galloping, hopping, underhand toss, basic frisbee release, two step jump roping. Late elementary skills include catching various objects, striking with implements (racket, bat…), jump rope in fluid movement, and one hand dribbling. Middle school skills include balancing on objects (stilts, pogo stick…), complex group movement (dances, games with problem solving and strategy), intermediate body-weight exercise technique and much more!
Will students learn dance?
Yes! Movement to rhythm and specific dance skills will be included within the curriculum to enhance the skills, fitness levels, musical skills, and self expression through movement!
How will students be graded?
Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 10 points each class equally divided among 5 categories:
Self Control
Participation
Attentiveness
Responsibility/Respect
Kindness
Written responses, reflections of activities, and fitness activities will also be included.
How often do students have Physical Education Class?
Each student at Coonley Elementary has class with Mr. Hamlin or Ms. Collins twice per 7 day Round (A-G) for 60 minutes alternating quarters (1st & 3rd or 2nd & 4th)
What should students wear on days they have P.E. Class?
Students should wear shoes that are closed-toe, grip well on tile and wood surfaces, and support jumping and balancing. Footwear should stay on with kicking movements and should not cause blisters with repeated movements. Students should wear clothes that allow them to move freely, do not expose undergarments when seated or lying on the floor (sit-ups etc.), and effectively allow body temperature regulation.
